What I Build
DeckWorx builds three things: composite and timber decking, pergolas, and pagodas. I'm Alfie Jaques, a City & Guilds qualified carpenter, and I build every job myself across Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch, one garden at a time.

Ground-level decks off the back door, and raised decks that make a level space on a sloping garden. Any post that goes into the soil is Use Class 4 treated, and I cut the joints rather than relying on brackets.
Which board? It depends what look you're going for. Timber gives a natural finish you can stain. For a more modern, cleaner look, go for composite: it drains better, doesn't soak up as much water and won't rot, which makes it worth a look in shaded gardens and near the sea. My composite vs timber guide compares the two.

An open frame of posts and beams that marks out a spot to sit back, relax and get a table under. A freestanding pergola at a house often needs no planning application if it stays within the height limits, which depend on how close it is to your boundary.
Fixing one to the house wall changes the rules, so I check where it's going before I design it.

A pagoda, as I build it, is a pergola with a solid roof, so the table under it stays usable in the rain.
A roof adds height, wind load and rainwater to plan for, and it can bring Building Regulations in, so I design the roof, guttering and fixings together.
