Decking in Christchurch
Last updated: October 2026
DeckWorx is Alfie Jaques, a City & Guilds qualified carpenter who builds composite and timber decking, pergolas and pagodas in Christchurch, including Mudeford, Stanpit, Purewell, Burton and Highcliffe. Highcliffe is about six miles from my Bournemouth base. I work on one garden at a time with no subcontractors, and every job starts with a free, fixed-price quote, itemised in writing.
A new business with one builder. You deal with me from the first visit to the last board.

Which Council?
Who do I ask about planning for decking in Christchurch?
Christchurch itself, including Mudeford, Stanpit, Purewell and Burton, comes under BCP Council. A little further east, Bransgore and Hinton Admiral come under New Forest District Council instead. Same kind of deck, different council, so the first thing I check is which one covers your address.
Under either council the national rules are the starting point. For a house, the Planning Portal says decking needs no application when it is no more than 30cm above the ground, none of it is in front of the main front wall, and together with other extensions and outbuildings it covers no more than half the garden. Flats and maisonettes don't get those rights.
The Priory and the Old Town
Can I build a deck near Christchurch Priory?
Christchurch Priory is a listed building, and Christchurch Central is one of BCP Council's conservation areas. The Planning Portal is clear that within the grounds of any listed building, no decking is permitted without planning permission.
If your house isn't listed but is in a conservation area, a low deck behind the house can often go ahead, while decking at the side needs permission. BCP lists several conservation areas in Christchurch: Christchurch Central, Mudeford Quay, Stanpit and Fisherman's Bank, Purewell, Burton, Bramble Lane, Winkton and Hurn among them.
How I Build
What does Christchurch Harbour mean for a deck?
BCP Council's coastal strategy for Christchurch Bay and Harbour flags more than 3,500 properties at risk from flooding and erosion over the next 100 years, so in Mudeford and Stanpit I plan for wet ground from the start.
That means Use Class 4 treated posts, meant for permanent ground contact, marine-grade stainless fixings, air under the boards so the frame dries out, and cut joints rather than brackets.
On the clifftops at Highcliffe the issue is wind off Christchurch Bay. Anything with a roof catches it, so posts need a proper anchor in the ground, chosen after a trial hole.
If there's a big tree near where you want a pergola, bear in mind that work affecting a tree with a Tree Preservation Order needs council permission first, so I've written a guide to building pergolas near protected trees in Christchurch.
Decking is one part of what I build. See all my decking, pergola and pagoda services across Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch.
Around Christchurch
Mudeford, the Town Centre and the Edges
Harbour gardens, old town streets and a council boundary: three different starting points.
Mudeford and Stanpit
Harbour damp and salt: Mudeford Quay and Stanpit and Fisherman's Bank are both conservation areas on the harbour. Expect marine-grade fixings, Use Class 4 posts and a frame that can breathe.
Town centre and Priory
Listed buildings: In Christchurch Central, check whether your house is listed before planning anything. If it is, decking needs planning permission; if it isn't, the side of the house is still restricted.
Bransgore and Hinton Admiral
A different council: East of Christchurch, New Forest District Council is the planning authority, not BCP. I confirm which council covers your address before designing.

Got Questions?
Christchurch Decking Questions
Do I need planning permission for decking near Christchurch Priory?
If your house is listed, yes: no decking is permitted within the grounds of a listed building without planning permission. If it isn't listed but sits in the Christchurch Central conservation area, decking at the side of the house needs permission. A low deck behind an unlisted house can often go ahead without an application. I check your address before designing.
Is my Christchurch address under BCP or New Forest District Council?
Christchurch, Mudeford, Stanpit, Purewell and Burton come under BCP Council. Bransgore and Hinton Admiral, to the east, come under New Forest District Council. I confirm yours before designing.
What do you use for a deck near Christchurch Harbour?
Use Class 4 treated posts for anything in the ground, marine-grade stainless fixings, and a frame with air under the boards. Composite boards suit damp harbour gardens because they don't absorb as much water and won't rot.
Do you build pergolas in Christchurch too?
Yes. Pergolas and pagodas are half of what I build. My pergola page covers the height limits, and my protected trees guide covers building near a big tree.
