Christchurch Garden Carpentry
Pergolas in Christchurch
Last updated: October 2026
I'm Alfie Jaques, and DeckWorx is my business. I'm a City & Guilds-qualified carpenter, and I design and hand-build timber pergolas for Christchurch gardens, from Mudeford and Stanpit to Highcliffe. I work on my own from a Bournemouth (BH2) base and cover about 10 miles around it. I build one garden at a time, and every price goes into a written, itemised quote before any work starts.
One carpenter from the first visit to the last fixing. No subcontractors.

The Problem
Why a Christchurch pergola starts with the address
A pergola is usually the tallest thing in a back garden, so it's the structure most likely to meet the planning rules. BCP Council lists 11 conservation areas on the Christchurch side, including Christchurch Central, Mudeford Quay, Stanpit and Fisherman's Bank, Purewell and Burton.
Inside one of those, a pergola at the side of the house needs planning permission. If the house is listed, any outbuilding in its grounds needs permission wherever it goes. Two houses on the same road can get two different answers.
What Goes Wrong
Kits don't know where your boundary is
A flat-pack pergola doesn't know whether your house is listed or how close the back fence is. Put one in the wrong spot and you're the one sorting it out with the council.
Near the harbour the trouble comes slower. Gardens around Mudeford, Stanpit and the Quay take salt-laden south-westerly wind through the winter, and harbourside ground can stay wet. Plain steel fixings rust and softwood posts rot from the base up. The Christchurch Bay and Harbour strategy, adopted by BCP Council and New Forest District Council in December 2025, counts over 3,500 properties at risk from coastal flooding or erosion over the next 100 years.
How I Build It
How I build a pergola for a Christchurch garden
- I check the address first. Conservation area, listed status and BCP's tree map. If a tree in a conservation area over 75mm across (measured 1.5m up) needs any work to make room, BCP wants six weeks' written notice before it starts, even when the tree has no Tree Preservation Order. See my root-safe approach near Christchurch trees.
- I design the height to the rules. If any part sits within 2 metres of a boundary, the whole pergola stays at 2.5 metres or under. Further in, it can go to 3 metres, or 4 metres with a dual-pitched roof, with the eaves no higher than 2.5 metres.
- I cut the joints. In my own words: "I don't just lay them on top. I actually cut out the joints."
- I build for wet ground and salt air. Posts in the ground are Use Class 4 treated, the level made for timber buried in soil or kept permanently wet. Near the harbour every fixing is marine-grade stainless steel, and posts are set in concrete or bolted to anchor plates against wind uplift.
- You get the quote in writing. Every measurement, material and fixing listed before you decide.
Pergolas sit alongside decking in my decking and pergola services across Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch. For a deck underneath, see my Christchurch decking page.
Fixing it to the house wall can make it an extension in planning terms. Read what changes when a pergola is fixed to the house.
Planning, Plainly
Do I need planning permission for a pergola in Christchurch?
Often not, for a house outside a conservation area that isn't listed. A pergola is generally treated like an outbuilding under permitted development: no higher than 2.5 metres within 2 metres of a boundary, no further forward than the front of the house, and, together with any other buildings, covering no more than half the garden. Flats and maisonettes don't get these rights at all.
Christchurch addresses are BCP Council. Bransgore and Hinton, on the eastern edge of where I work, come under New Forest District Council, so for those I check the rules with them instead.
For a pergola in a Christchurch conservation area such as Mudeford Quay or Stanpit, DeckWorx checks the address against BCP's conservation and tree records before designing, and keeps the build inside the permitted development limits wherever the garden allows it.

Straight Answers
I'm new, and I'd rather say so
I went straight from college into decking and pergolas, so I can't hand you a long list of past jobs. Judge me on the quote, and on me being on site for all of it.
And if a flat-pack kit genuinely suits a simple, square space, I'll tell you to buy the kit. Where it doesn't, "you're not going to have a fully custom fit to your area." That's the job I do.

Christchurch Pergola FAQs
Do I need planning permission for a pergola in Christchurch?
Often not, for a house that isn't listed or in a conservation area. Within 2 metres of a boundary a pergola must stay at 2.5 metres or under; further in it can reach 3 metres, or 4 metres with a dual-pitched roof. It can't sit forward of the front of the house, and with other buildings it must cover no more than half the garden. I check your address before designing.
Can I build a pergola in a Christchurch conservation area?
In many cases, yes, but the rules are tighter. Christchurch has 11 of BCP's conservation areas, including Christchurch Central, Mudeford Quay and Stanpit and Fisherman's Bank. Inside one, a pergola at the side of the house needs planning permission, and most trees (over 75mm across, measured 1.5m up) need six weeks' written notice to BCP before any work.
Who do I ask about planning if I live near Bransgore or Hinton?
New Forest District Council. Christchurch itself is BCP Council, but Bransgore and Hinton sit under New Forest District Council, so I check the rules with them for those addresses.
Will you be the one building it?
Yes. DeckWorx is just me. I quote it, I build it and I tidy up at the end of each day. No subcontractors.
